In order for an activity to be defined as “PDO tourism”, it must aim at safeguarding the reputation of the “PDO” and “PGI” designations, with initiatives that guarantee the quality of the products. It must also perform an educational function to spread knowledge about the products and their origins, and be sustainable, i. e. respectful of the environment, local communities and traditional values. Protection consortia must ensure that the tourist experiences offered are consistent with the typical values of the geographical indication. This commitment is in line with EU Regulation No. 1143 of 2024, which assigns the task of safeguarding “PDO” and “PGI” products to protect operators, consumers and communities. II. EU REGULATION NO. 1143 OF 2024 AND ITS OBJECTIVES EU Regulation No. 1143 of 2024 described the geographical indications of wines, spirits and agricultural products, as well as traditional specialities guaranteed and optional quality requirements for agricultural products. The European Union has established schemes for goods with specific recognisable characteristics, covering geographical indications for wines, spirits and agricultural products, including foodstuffs4. The Union’s quality policy should enable the transition to a sustainable food system and respond to society’s demands for consistent economic, environmentally and climate - friendly methods that ensure animal welfare. Businesses offering goods designated by geographical indications should be encouraged to comply with sustainable practices, including environmental, social and economic objectives. These could be laid down in the product specification or in a separate act and should relate to at least one of the three types mentioned, i. e. environmental, social and economic sustainability5. The aim of the Regulation is to establish a unified system of geographical indications, so that companies can exercise the necessary powers, also with a view to animal health and welfare. This encourages production in its three dimensions of economic, environmental and social value and ensures greater competitiveness6. 4 See the first recital of EU Regulation No. 1143 of 2024. 5 See the twenty - third recital of EU Regulation No. 1143 of 2024. 6 See Article 4 of EU Regulation No. 1143 of 2024, according to which “a single, comprehensive system of geographical indications is established to protect the names of wines, spirit drinks and agricultural products with characteristics, properties or reputation linked to their place of production”. 63 “PDO TOURISM” AND THE ITALIAN SYSTEM
