system currently includes one hundred and three roads and itineraries, seventeen UNESCO sites, twenty - nine historic rural landscapes and eighty - two parks and protected areas. In 2024, two hundred thirty - five events were recorded, confirming this as the most dynamic aspect of ‘PDO tourism’, with established initiatives such as ‘open dairies’ or ‘guided tastings in wineries’, together with new proposals such as cultural festivals and sporting events linked to ‘PDO’ and ‘PGI’ products and territories”. In addition, there are one hundred eighty - eight permanent infrastructures offering experiences linked to “PDO” products: “wine and food trails”, “food museums, educational spaces and accessible cultural heritage sites”. Three hundred and thirty official recognitions have been awarded to areas of origin; the Prosecco Hills of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano16 have been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the regional and national parks managed by the Ministry of the Environment, which represent the link between production excellence and environmental value, have been recognised as historic rural landscapes by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry. Finally, the Qualivita Foundation report contains an analysis of forty - one consortia considered to be models, including those for Parma ham, Garda “PDO” oil and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Based on the national ranking, the top positions are held by Veneto, Tuscany17, Emilia - Romagna and Lombardy, which stand out for their long - standing supply chains and established tourist appeal. Some doubts remain because consortia are created to protect products, and one may wonder whether they always manage to shift their interests towards promoting and incentivising tourism initiatives. 16 See M.
