general requirements for food hygiene and the provision of information to consumers (including claims about food healthfulness and nutritional value), requirements for the health of individuals handling food, mandatory hygiene checks, and necessary knowledge of healthy nutrition, as well as the procedures for acquiring such knowledge. The Ministry prepares dietary recommendations, promotes healthy eating habits, and develops and approves programs aimed at improving public nutrition. Ministry of Agriculture - within its competence, the Ministry develops state policy regarding the quality of food products and raw materials, the production of organic agricultural and food products, and the enhancement of the international competitiveness of products manufactured in Lithuania, while coordinating its implementation. It sets mandatory requirements for food produced under quality schemes recognized by the European Union and/or the Republic of Lithuania, food composition and quality, cultivation of plants intended for food, marketing, and the use and control of plant protection measures. The Ministry establishes special food labelling requirements and either directly or through authorized institutions monitors compliance with quality requirements for fresh fruits and vegetables. Ministry of Economy and Innovation - within its competence, the Ministry implements food trade policy. It sets general mandatory requirements for labelling and trading of food products in the Lithuanian market and performs other functions as regulated by laws and other legal acts. State Food and Veterinary Service - within its competence, this authority implements policies on food safety, quality, and handling supervision. It establishes special safety, handling, and hygiene requirements for food imported into the European Union and controls compliance with these requirements. It also conducts inspections of food safety and quality. Moreover, it performs state control over the production, processing, marketing, and importation into the European Union of materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, as regulated by EU and national legislation, and executes other functions assigned by laws and other legal acts.
