The main objective of this service is to strengthen public health and consumer protection related to food safety and quality, and to ensure animal health and welfare (Valstybinė maisto ir veterinarinė tarnyba, 2025). The State Food and Veterinary Service carries out its activities and functions in accordance with the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 28 June 2000 No. 744 “On the Approval of the Regulations of the State Food and Veterinary Service”. According to paragraphs 13.1 and 13.2 of the Regulations, this service adopts legal acts in the areas of food safety, quality and handling supervision and reduction of morbidity in animals intended for food, animal welfare and protection, veterinary medicine, feed and other areas assigned by legal acts, and coordinates draft legal acts prepared by other institutions related to food safety, quality and handling supervision. It is important to mention that this institution also has the right, in accordance with the procedure established by legal acts, to receive information and documents from state and municipal institutions, bodies, other legal entities and natural persons on issues within the competence of the Service; to establish commissions and working groups to prepare proposals for draft legal acts; to conclude contracts and agreements with legal entities of the Republic of Lithuania and foreign states and to receive support in accordance with the Law on Support and Charity of the Republic of Lithuania.
