When providing children’s catering services, companies must follow the Order of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Lithuania of 11 November 2011 No. V-964 “On Approval of the Description of the Procedure for Organizing Children’s Catering”. This description establishes the requirements for children’s catering provided in institutions implementing pre-school and general education programs, children’s recreation camps, providing accommodation services, and children’s stationary social service institutions. Children’s catering, except when food is prepared in separate kitchens of children’s social care homes, may be organized only by registered food handling entities. Children’s menu must be drawn up considering the recommended daily allowances and the duration of children’s stay in the institution. The energy and nutritional value of the menus may deviate from the recommended daily allowances by no more than five percent. The food served to children must be of high quality and varied. Overcooking and burning food is prohibited; vegetables and fruits must be served every day (seasonal, fresh ones are recommended). It is recommended that fruits be served during supplementary feeding. A dish of plant-based foods must also be served every day. This description also sets out other requirements for children’s nutrition. In Lithuania, a national food quality system has been legalized since 2022, replacing the national agricultural and food product quality system in force since 2007.
